6 of The Best Ikea Nightstand Hacks + How We Hacked Ours

I’ve owned my fair share of Ikea furniture over the years and while the pieces are extremely affordable and easily accessible, they aren’t typically pieces that provide a ton of longevity when it comes to wear and tear. Over the years we’ve upgraded most all of our Ikea furniture for pieces that are well made and will last for years to come but we still own two nightstands from Ikea.

When we moved in 2 years ago our previous nightstands were too big. In an effort to settle into our new home rather quickly, we purchased two inexpensive Vikhammer nightstands from Ikea and while I’d love to splurge on something nicer one day, they’ve been great place holder pieces thus far.

We have a pretty narrow bedroom and the Vikhammer nightstands from Ikea were not only affordable at a time when we were bleeding money just having purchased a new house, but I liked the modern lines and clean shape, plus they also happen to be a perfect fit for our space too.

One of the things I do appreciate about Ikea furniture is how easy it is to customize which allows you to give your piece a high end look without the high end price tag. Over the years we’ve hacked our nightstands a bit to give them a higher end look by adding a gold cup pull to the drawer front where there previously was none and most recently, we added a marble pastry board to the top, which gave our Ikea nightstands a super high end look for a fraction of the cost.

The marble pastry board gives the laminate top of our Ikea nightstand an added layer of durability while making it look and feel more expensive than it really is. The gold cup pull is like jewlery on the face of an otherwise plain piece of furniture while also serving as a functional element of our nightstand too.

The world of hacking Ikea furniture is nothing new but I always enjoy seeing all the clever ways people upgrade their inexpensive Ikea pieces. Some of the ideas are so creative and transformative, that you’d hardly believe that what they started with was a big box piece of furniture.
